Volunteers – keeping Aotearoa active

The motivations of sports volunteers

Whether it’s on a field, a playground, the court or in the great outdoors - volunteers help keep Aotearoa New Zealand active.

Over one million New Zealanders volunteered to support sport and recreation in 2024. A recent panel survey on volunteering tells us the main reasons New Zealanders volunteer is to give back, for social benefits or passion for an activity.

We also learnt the largest age group of volunteers in the sector are 18-24 year olds and 57% of volunteers spend 1-5 hours per week in their volunteer role.

Thanks to all the volunteers who bring energy, kindness and teamwork to their roles every day to keep Aotearoa physically active.
